Managing Director of NDEP receives The Aret Adams Award

The Managing Director of Niger Delta Exploration & Production Plc (NDEP), Dr. Layi Fatona, has received the prestigious Aret Adams Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Field and Practice of Petroleum Exploration in Nigeria.

The Award, conferred by the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), is instituted in honour of Late Chief Aret Adams, in memory of his excellence. Fittingly, the Aret Adams Award is the highest award bestowed by NAPE and acknowledges earth scientists who have made significant contributions to the Oil and gas industry. NAPE’s Award Committee, who oversees nominations, also gave the award to a second worthy recipient, Dr Emmanuel Egbogah, OON, Special Adviser to the President on Petroleum Matters.

Dr Fatona, throughout his distinguished career, has demonstrated excellence, innovation and dedication. Since obtaining his Masters of Science and Doctorate Degrees from The Imperial College of Science, Technology And Medicine, University of London, and during his working life, starting at the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) in 1974, has worked tirelessly to advance the frontiers of Petroleum Exploration & Production in Nigeria.

Dr Fatona has also used his expertise to boost capacity within the Nigerian indigenous Oil and Gas sector. He was part of the team that founded NDEP, a publicly owned Independent Oil and Gas focused Investment Company, becoming its first Managing Director. In this position, he led the NDEP team, with guidance from the Management Team and Board of Directors, to achieve many remarkable and pioneering accomplishments. These include securing the first ever marginal Field Farm-Out agreement with the NNPC/Chevron JV for the Ogbele Field, achieving First Oil on the 28th August 2005 and more recently, achieving 5MM barrels of production in June 2010. Dr Fatona is a past President and a Fellow of NAPE.

‘To receive this Award is an honour and I am deeply humbled’, said Dr Layi Fatona. ‘In many ways, being conferred with the Aret Adams Award is akin to a chicken coming home to roost. Firstly, as a past President of NAPE and secondly, as a most Senior Officer of the company I work for, NDEP, which is a creation and legacy of a great mind, Late Chief Aret Adams.’

‘I am extremely grateful to all those who supported me and made this Award possible. Thank you to my family, the Board, Management and Staff of NDEP and finally, to Late Chief Aret Adams himself, for his encouragement and character, who not only made the NDEP vision a reality, but also showed me that Nigerians can be empowered to bring Nigeria to fulfillment and greatness.’

The Awards Ceremony, held in Abuja on the 15th November 2010, were part of the 3rd Regional Deepwater Offshore West Africa Conference & Exhibition (DOWAC), organised by NAPE in partnership with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Africa Region.
